The Meressina project “officially” inaugurated the collaboration between the NINA Center and the Biorobotics Institute of the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna in Pisa.

The work was divided into three phases: an initial, theoretical study of the anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system of the newborn (on the medical side) and of materials (on the engineering side); a second one, for the design and construction of the prototype; and, finally, a third, validation through the use in simulation courses on respiratory assistance of the newborn. The final result, a 5-chamber pulmonary simulator, controlled through dedicated software, can be connected to the instrumentation for ventilatory assistance commonly used in Neonatal Intensive Care.

Corso ADVANCED: la Rianimazione Neonatale


Medici, Infermieri, Ostetriche, Fisioterapisti e OSS del Sistema Sanitario Nazionale

Il corso ADVANCED è dedicato soprattutto agli operatori con maggior esperienza in ambito neonatologico e di rianimazione. Il fine ultimo è l’acquisizione di non-techical skills sulle principali emergenze neonatali.

Nei corsi avanzati le lezioni teoriche sono limitate in numero e concentrate al fine di lasciare più tempo a disposizione per le sessioni pratiche.

Sono stati quindi ideati scenari di rianimazione neonatale complessi in cui si mira soprattutto a valutare la capacità di gestire l’emergenza e la capacità di lavorare in team.

Gli argomenti trattati nel corso hanno riguardato principalmente:

  • La fisiopatologia della transizione tra vita intrauterina ed extrauterina con particolare attenzione all’asfissia perinatale.
  • L’algoritmo della rianimazione secondo le ultime linee guida dell’American Accademy of Pediatrics.
  • Il corretto utilizzo dei presidi della rianimazione (laringoscopi, tubi tracheali, pallone auto insufflante, rianimatore a t…)
  • Alcune emergenze neonatali: l’intubazione, la gestione dell’accesso vascolare, lo pneumotorace…

Premature Anne

The first 10 minutes are critical for a preterm infant. When complications arise, health care providers must be prepared to offer quality care. The preterm mannequin is designed to prepare health caregivers through realistic experiences to help save these small lives. The Center has a “Premature Anne” simulator available for training students in critical situations of preterm births.

Preterm simulator has important characteristics for the correct training in simulation.

  • Realistically proportioned preterm infant
  • The anatomically precise airways are designed for training on airway management and include the placement of an ET tube
  • The dummy is extremely portable and allows use in multiple clinical settings and in scenarios where transport is required

Newborn Anne

The Laerdal NewBorn Anne mannequins are essential in the formation of emergency situations, and thanks to their realistic anatomy they allow to simulate the intubation for cardio-respiratory resuscitation. The Nina Center is equipped with 6 of this simulator, to ensure the training of more people during the organized courses.

Airway characteristics

  • Positioning of the newborn to simulate the opening of the airways through hyper-extension of the head, subluxation of the jaw or lifting of the chin
  • Positive Pressure Ventilation (with resuscitator, resuscitator T-Piece resuscitator or anesthesia balloon)
  • Intubation with ET tube
  • LMA entry
  • Orogastric tube insertion
  • Stomach distension (when the ET tube is not in the correct position)
  • Aspiration (of the nostrils, nasopharynx, oropharynx, esophagus and lungs via ET tube)
  • Module for removal by aspiration of meconium


Respiratory characteristics

  • Lifting of the bilateral and unilateral thorax following mechanical ventilation (with the possibility of intubation of the right bronchus only)
  • Pneumothorax – Middle axillary left thoracentesis with needle (pneumothorax)


Cardiac Features

  • Manual chest compressions at depth (1/3 AP) and correct strength


Circulatory characteristics

  • Manual umbilical pulse
  • Vascular access
  • Access through the umbilical vein / artery via a specially patented navel

SimMom is an advanced full-body birth simulator with accurate anatomy and functionality to facilitate multi-professional obstetric birth management training, with manual and automatic delivery.

The Laerdal SimMom simulator is completely wired and connected in the delivery room via audio-video with a direction: this allows you to continuously record and monitor delivery simulations and thus create a vast archive of videos and possible scenarios to be used for training.

The mannequin is controlled by the director, where technicians can define a very large quantity of variables, such as respiratory rate, convulsions, contractions and a whole series of sounds that simulate those actually emitted during birth to make the training experience as realistic as possible.

SimNewB is an interactive simulator, designed by Laerdal together with the American Academy of Pediatrics to meet the training requirements of the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP). It is a baby with realistic traits and able to offer complete feedback. SimNewB is ideal for training courses on the specific needs of newborns.

Treatment of endangered infants requires the best training. SimNewB was designed to be easily integrated into all neonatal clinical training curricula. An innovative user interface and scenario design allows instructors to check the simulator’s responses.


Realistic clinical traits and feedback

SimNewB allows students to practice on a wide range of neonatal skills within a realistic simulation environment. The airways were designed to allow training in all aspects of newborn airway management, including the use of positive pressure breathing devices and ET and LMA tube placement.

SimNewB also presents:

  • Realistic anatomy – measures 52.5cm (21″) and weighs 3.17kg (7 lbs).
  • Patented navel with realistic pulsation that can be evaluated, cut and catheterized for intravenous therapy.
  • Intraosseous access in both legs.
  • Lung compliance can be altered by an instructor.
  • Realistic chest lift can be adapted to be absent or normal, with breathing rates up to 100 breaths per minute.
